FAMILY HEALTH TEAM CHOOSES PERMANENT SITE
Story by Mike Thibodeau, Leamington Post, September 24/08

The Leamington and Area Family Health Team has selected the location of its permanent site. Eleven proposals from nine developers were received in response to a Request for Proposal issued in early July. Amico Design Build Inc., a Triamico Affiliate, was the successful proponent, submitting a proposal that met the requirements of the Family Health Team.

Centrally located in the service area which includes Wheatley, Leamington and Kingsville, the site is located at 197 Talbot Street West, across from the Leamington District Memorial Hospital. The site plan for the development, which includes the health team building, was approved by Leamington council last week. It is part of a larger development located on nine acres.

The health team has been temporarily located on the 3rd Floor of the hospital since opening in April 2007. It has maximized the use of the space available at the hospital and needs to move in order to expand, said spokesperson

Home to five physicians, three nurse practitioners, a registered nurse and three registered practical nurses, the Family Health Team will move to a larger site in order to further build an interdisciplinary team of health professionals. An additional three physicians are located in their own offices in Leamington.

Town planner Tracey Pillon-Abbs said the project would be built in two phases, a 14,500 square foot building for the health team to the south, and 53,000 square foot building north of that.

The two phases would only occupy about half of the property, leaving a large green space north to the old railway land. The main entrance will be on Talbot St. but two other entrances for the whole project are also being considered at Nancy and Grace streets. The municipality will use the site plan to control buffering, traffic space, drainage and other planning aspects of the project.

At maturity, the Family Health Team will be comprised of additional physicians and allied health professionals that may include nurse practitioners, registered nurses, registered practical nurses, social workers, a dietitian, a pharmacist, a psychologist, physiotherapist, foot care, respiratory therapy and occupational therapy.

Family health team program manager, Joanne Brown said the developer has commitments from other health services to locate within the development. A ground breaking at the site is planned for early October.  Brown encourages persons living in Kingsville, Leamington or Wheatley who do not have a family doctor to apply to be “rostered” with one of the Family Health Team’s physicians. To date, over 10,000 patients have signed up.
